Dutch Row House Renovation

[THE ASK]

For this project, I undertook the complete renovation of a 60 sqm Dutch row house located in the protected city sight of Haarlem. The house, dating from the 1700s, was fully stripped back to its bare structure, with new floors, walls, plumbing, and electrical systems installed. This renovation aimed to modernize the interior while respecting the historical context of the property.

Key aspects of my role:

Design and Concept:

I designed a modern, functional living space that maintained the charm of the original 18th-century architecture. My focus was on creating a comfortable, contemporary environment that blended seamlessly with the house’s historical features.
Given the small footprint of the house, the design prioritized maximizing natural light and optimizing space, with an open plan for the main living areas to enhance the sense of roominess.
Technical Drawings and Visualizations:

I produced all the technical drawings necessary for construction, ensuring that every detail—from structural elements to finishes—was clearly defined. These plans included plumbing, electrical layouts, and custom carpentry designs.
Visualizations were created to help the client understand the design intent, providing a clear picture of the finished result before construction began.
Project Management and Tendering:

I managed the entire tendering process, ensuring that contractors and suppliers were chosen based on quality, cost-effectiveness, and their ability to work within the protected city sight regulations.
As the project manager, I oversaw the construction and demolition processes, ensuring that the renovation stayed on schedule and within budget.
Budget Control and Sourcing:

Throughout the project, I controlled the budget, carefully sourcing all materials and hardware to maintain both quality and cost efficiency.
I was also responsible for managing the recycling of waste, ensuring that the project adhered to sustainable practices, particularly important given the historical significance of the location.
This renovation project highlights my ability to manage complex projects from start to finish, combining design, technical expertise, project management, and a focus on sustainability within a historically sensitive environment.
