[THE ASK]
As the Lead Store Designer for Nike’s Employee Store at the European headquarters in Hilversum, the Netherlands, I took charge of delivering a unique and innovative retail space tailored to the needs of Nike employees. My role extended from initial design through to completion, focusing on optimizing a challenging layout and introducing new concepts for testing.
Key Responsibilities and Achievements:
Architectural Design and Layout Optimization:
* Mixed Concept Implementation: Developed and implemented a flexible, mixed-use design concept, blending traditional retail elements with innovative, employee-focused features.
* Reduced Footprint Solutions: Designed an efficient layout to maximize the reduced footprint of the store, overcoming space constraints through creative spatial arrangements.
* Gender Split Layout: Addressed spatial challenges by introducing a gender split within the layout, allowing for a more intuitive shopping experience and better flow management.
Special Features:
* Orange Room for Click & Collect: Designed and implemented the "Orange Room," a dedicated space for Click & Collect orders, optimizing the employee shopping experience through seamless integration of digital and physical retail.
* Digital Elements Integration: Introduced digital display elements and signage, aligning the design with Nike’s tech-forward brand vision while enhancing the store's functionality and appeal.
New Brand Concepts and Testing:
* Innovation Testing Ground: Oversaw the integration of new brand concepts, using the Employee Store as a testing platform for Nike's evolving retail strategies and experiential design.
Construction and Project Management:
* Vendor and Supplier Coordination: Actively managed relationships with construction vendors and suppliers, ensuring adherence to design specifications and timelines.
* On-Site Supervision and Snagging: Conducted regular site visits and snagging to identify and resolve construction issues, ensuring smooth project execution and handover.
Post-Completion Oversight:
* Ensuring Operational Excellence: Conducted thorough post-delivery inspections to guarantee that all design elements functioned as planned, troubleshooting any issues that arose during the store’s operational phase.
This role required hands-on involvement at every stage of the design and construction process, blending innovative solutions with Nike’s brand identity and meeting the unique needs of the employee-based clientele at the headquarters.
